Back To Uni

Today I went back to school, well Uni at least to give a careers speech to 2nd year students on my career to date! Quite a bizarre experience thinking back on what I have achieved since i left uni, 7 years ago! I was also quite sad when i realised it had been that long. It’s funny when you actually look back on where you started and it makes you realise how much you have achieved. It is both humbling and motivating to keep on working, tirelessly, to achieve all my dreams.

I was the 3rd and final speaker today and after I sped read, I was quite nervous at the thought of speaking to 140 students and was slightly relieved when they all didn’t turn up. I showed them examples of my styling work and vintage boutique website there was a chance to ask us all some questions.

It was an honour to be asked to take part in today’s event and it made me think about how much I would have enjoyed this session when I was at uni. When I graduated I felt lost and frustrated all at the same time. I knew I wanted to be a stylist, that I would relocate anywhere for the right job & that I would try my hardest but the biggest hurdle I faced was where to start! Naturally I decided to go travelling, why not hey I was young, free and loved travelling. After a year on the road my career really began.

Sir Norman Parkinson

Photography Sir Norman Parkinson Styling Grace Coddington
Today is the 100th birthday of Sir Norman Parkinson, one of this countries finest fashion photographers although he passed away in 1990. Known the world over for revoultionising the British fashion photography industry by taking photos of his models outside…. it was the 1940’s. He has also worked with my all time favourite fashion stylist, and one time model, Grace Coddington. Their work together tells a fun, fashion fastasy that I’d love to be in.

Blooming Marvelous….

Birmingham’s Entry at Chelsea Flowers Show 2012

Not only is the sun shining and everyone is smiling but Chelsea Flower show is in full swing. A big trend for spring summer 2012 are floral prints, from tee’s to trousers all the way back to Hawaiian Shirts, florals are huge. If you like to stand out from the crowd then don’t hold back and go head to toe, if your looking for something a bit more understated then a pretty dress or discreet top would work well.

Here are some styling ideas..

For a simple and elegant look this dress works wonders, it has a beautiful discreet floral strip print and mid length. I love it.

If you are feeling more daring this floral cropped jacket is perfect, its eye catching, colourful and perfect for summer.

This black floral dress is a smart casual dress suitable for work and the pub. With its double breasted fastening it is flattering and comfortable… Perfect.

This bold floral short sleeved dress is eye catching and pefect if you want to be noticed. Its also fun and very flattering.

Ones To Watch

A few of my favorite new designers out now.

A design duo who are self confessed Denim addicts. I love the bleached out oversized street hippie look they have created. Beautiful, fresh and surprisingly feminine.

Style Q & A Olympics

So if your lucky enough to be going to the London Olympics this year, your probably rich and powerful and have your own live-in stylist so won’t be needing to know what to wear, however if your a mere mortal, like myself, and have entered a competition to win tickets to the Olympics then here’s what you should be wearing. Sporty fashion is a very big trend this Spring Summer so just try it out anyway! Enjoy.

90’s…. Vintage…..!

Having been born in the mid 80’s I am still coming to terms with the fact that my childhood clothes are becoming “Vintage”. Anything that is 20 years or older is classed as Vintage so early 90’s clothing is now old enough! Crazy. If you were anything like me I spent most of my time wearing Adidas 3 stripe tracksuit bottoms, 1 pair even had poppers going all the way up to the waist band! how cool =), logo jumpers meaning anything from Kappa to Reebok to The Sweatershop! Dark denim jeans with matching denim jacket! My aim was to blend in as I was very shy. I also have memories of my older sister teaching me to make a scrunchy the 90’s must have hair accessory ha-ha.
The 90’s weren’t just filled with my fashion, faux pars, it was also filled with Kurt Cobain, Cortney Love, the awesome Clueless, Saved By The Bell Kickers and Doc Martens!
