U Is for Unique on the High Street…. Topshop

Topshop Unique Autumn Winter 2015

Ahh Topshop a long time high street favourite of mine and millions of other, now around the world. The “Super” High Street British brand has gone from strength to strength with no sign of slowing down. Why you say? The innate ability to “know” what we women want to wear, the ability to translate Catwalk trends down to high street prices (be them top end high street prices) but without losing the details that make it special. The way that they offer something for everyone and that brings me nicely on the Unique label that is designed by Topshop itself.

A label that yes is High Street but shows at London Fashion Week. A HIGH STREET label that manages to attract no other that Anna Wintor ( who wore Alexander McQueen, you can’t have everything), Kate Moss & little model, soon to be super model, sister Lottie to their front row. The pull to Topshop Uniques LFW is their ability to cleverly combine the current fashion zeitgeist whilst adding its own youthful and relevant spin.

Their Autumn Winter 2015 collection is about English heritage and a “rebellious streak”. That idea of tomboy toughness combined with a reluctant pretty for a series of Margot Tenenbaums, all smokey eyes, bleach-blonde hair and fuzzy coats worn dishevelled and sloping off the shoulder.

The way that Topshop style their clothes is also another key element to their success. A mix of the belted and bunched yet simultaneously a little unkempt. It was a true reflection of how girls want to look and how they wear their clothes.

There were cropped little knits over gymslips and super cool, padded puffa parkas in steel and navy. Pinafore dresses came later and then prom numbers that again showed some shoulders – be it through a sheer, sequined top half or a squared-off neckline.

Sweatshirts were beaded and fake fuzzy shearling – colourful and patchworked to give a romantic quality to the whole thing. Even tomboys have a soft side after all.

Almost like a little bit of your own Catwalk Fashion magic….. very clevor Sir Philip Green!

& Other Stories….

H&M , who also own Cos & denim brand Cheap Monday, have announced that they are launching another new brand called “& Other Stories.

&Other Stories Inspiration

With design studios in Paris and Stockholm it allows the company to cherry-pick from the wealth of designers based in each city, but also to incorporate two of the most popular strands in fashion right now: nonchalant, downbeat Gallic chic and that grungy Scandi edge – both filter through.

The clue is in the name. Unlike most mid-priced retailers, & Other Stories items, which include beauty products, makeup, shoes, bags, jewellery and clothing, are not inspired by catwalk trends or marketed as “must have” pieces.

&Other Stories

“We went to different cities and looked at how the impact of social media, street style and bloggers has made women more fashion savvy,” said creative director Sara Hilden-Bengtsson. “Women create looks differently than they did 10-15 years ago. They create their own stories through their personal style and they know fashion.”

The store VM creates a series of clever edits, so that customers can easily achieve the spontaneous “I just threw this look together” attitude, popularised by bloggers. “Contradiction and Minimalism” for example features a leather dress, and a small selection of shoes, bags and jewellery that will work with it. There is nail polish to match iPhone holders and lipstick glosses to match jewellery, a fun, unique and novel idea.

&Other Stories
From my understanding the prices will be at the top end of the price bracket, with jackets at £200, Shoes £120 are well made & real leather and Totes at £145 are the same. More premium high street prices but are well designed and made to last.
