Body Adornment- Art of Journeys

Line Art by Rachael Sadler
Have you ever been stuck in traffic, delayed on a train on stuck on a bus thinking about all the time your wasting on the journey? Of course you have, so have I, so I decided to document my journey’s by drawing them. Not in the traditional way, but by letting the movement of the journey draw itself. I used a mix of different paper and ink, my favourite outcome was achieved using blotting paper and fast flowing black ink pens.

From the drawings I also recorded the snippets of conversations I overheard to give a sense of surroundings and a the piece of work its own voice.

Finally I then recreated my favourite journeys, 6 in total, into different large scale wire and button body adornments or living art. They all were designed to link in together. Originally designed as body adornment but now displayed as art on my wall.. I love it but would love to know what you think?

Princess Diana Style Icon

Diana Princess Of Whales & John Travolta
10 dresses belonging to the Diana, Princess of Wales, fetched over £800,000 at a Kerry Taylor auction in London  on Tuesday the 19th March.

The top lot, at £240,000, was a Victor Edelstein midnight blue velvet gown that the royal wore to a State dinner at the White House at which she danced with John Travolta. It was bought by a British man who wanted to cheer up his wife! Lucky lady.

Vintage Style Diana Princess Of Whales

The above is a dress made by Catherine Walker worn for a state visit to Austria in 1989. I adore this dress now and would love to wear it, not suitable for the pub though =)

Another favourtie of mine is this one by Zandra Rhodes worn in 1987, classic style that still looks as wonderful and fashionable now 20 years later!

Would You Wear It?

Scrunchie 90’s Fashion

Last year I posted a “How To” guide on making scrunchies, something that I loved do with my older sister when I was a kid. With the 90’s fashion trend, not just sticking around, but growing momentum Scrunchies are hitting fashion forward stores such as Urban Outfitters. But I have to ask would you wear them?? Have you been wearing them since the 90’s or do you think its a step to far?

Me…. I am keeping an open mind…. I am going to make one over the next couple of weeks so I will let you know.

Inspired by last years exhibition Ballgowns; British Glamour since 1950. Coast has taken inspiration from the Museums vast archives to create styles that exude glamour. With the more and more people turning away from fast disposable fashion, wanting to by key pieces that they can treasure and enjoy for years, I think that this collaboration for Coast will be very successful, not just in profits but in widening their customer demographic to a younger client base.

& Other Stories….

H&M , who also own Cos & denim brand Cheap Monday, have announced that they are launching another new brand called “& Other Stories.

&Other Stories Inspiration

With design studios in Paris and Stockholm it allows the company to cherry-pick from the wealth of designers based in each city, but also to incorporate two of the most popular strands in fashion right now: nonchalant, downbeat Gallic chic and that grungy Scandi edge – both filter through.

The clue is in the name. Unlike most mid-priced retailers, & Other Stories items, which include beauty products, makeup, shoes, bags, jewellery and clothing, are not inspired by catwalk trends or marketed as “must have” pieces.

&Other Stories

“We went to different cities and looked at how the impact of social media, street style and bloggers has made women more fashion savvy,” said creative director Sara Hilden-Bengtsson. “Women create looks differently than they did 10-15 years ago. They create their own stories through their personal style and they know fashion.”

The store VM creates a series of clever edits, so that customers can easily achieve the spontaneous “I just threw this look together” attitude, popularised by bloggers. “Contradiction and Minimalism” for example features a leather dress, and a small selection of shoes, bags and jewellery that will work with it. There is nail polish to match iPhone holders and lipstick glosses to match jewellery, a fun, unique and novel idea.

&Other Stories
From my understanding the prices will be at the top end of the price bracket, with jackets at £200, Shoes £120 are well made & real leather and Totes at £145 are the same. More premium high street prices but are well designed and made to last.

The Great Gatsby @ Cannes Film Festival

THE GREAT GATSBY will open the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. The long-awaited Baz Lurhmann remake will be screened in 3D on the first night of this year’s schedule, the 15th of May.
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan as Daisy, the F. Scott Fitzgerald adaptation was originally scheduled to open in Christmas 2012, but was pushed back to allow Lurhmann more time to perfect the production.

The Great Gatsby Film 2013

It has been confirmed that over 40 costumes in the film were custom-made by Miuccia Prada, using reworked pieces from the Prada and Miu Miu archives. The jewellery featured all came courtesy of Tiffany & Co, while the men’s costumes were created by American brand Brooks Brothers. With my love for all things vintage I think that this is going to be a feast for the eyes and I can’t wait to see it.
